Easy, Bench beat Fisk in 75 and Munson in 76. You don't compare anyone with Johnny Bench.

This was a tremendous rivalry. I'm a Sox fan and of course feel Fisk was the better of the two. I still vividly remember watching the game the day after Munson died in a plane crash. I welled up like millions of other Americans watching that broadcast. That was a sad day in my childhood and this is coming from a die hard Red Sox fan. RIP Thurman. 🕆

To this day, Tim Apel still claims that Thurm actually did purposely drop several third strikes. This story was reiterated in Thurm’s biography. Appel also claims that he was the one who told Munson about the assists stat.

Fisk looked like a latino burn victim in his Rookie Card, he's not better looking than Munson, perhaps Roy, but not Thurman.

The only upside of this rivalry is the fact that it may have pushed Munson and Fisk to do better, just to be better than the other.

With all due respect to Fisk - and I think most Red Sox fans would admit this deep down - Munson was a better catcher. And Fisk was a great catcher.

Bench and Fisk are in the hall, but 2 outs in the ninth and you need a hit to win, Give me Thurman up 7 days a week.
He was more clutch and had the biggest heart.

Ok.. Great video, but believe me when I say it wasn't a missed bunt. Yes it was a "suicide squeeze" but it was probably his intention to absolutely truck Fisk at the plate. That's how baseball was back then

This is a great story about a too-short rivalry between wonderful catchers and team leaders. A great telling. As someone said below: you're not John Bois but you are certainly welcome to stay.

Growing up a Red Sox fan who listed Carlton Fisk (I got his autograph when he posthumously won Rookie of the Year) as one of his favorite players, (It ABSOLUTELY broke my heart when he changed his "sox"!!! Watching one of his earlier games as a member of the White Sox and against the Red Sox and hitting a home run against the team he should've still been playing with and, what's worse, is that, if I remember correctly, it was a game winning home run too. Curse you Haywood Sullivan and Buddy LeRoux!), I vicariously followed both the Fisk-Munson rivalry and the Red Sox-Yankees. What a rivalry! I'm glad it's still the greatest rivalry in sports! Some may say it's the Dallas Cowboys-Washington Redskins (I'm a Cowboys fan.), or Michigan-Ohio State or North Carolina-(I have a sister who graduated from there.)-Duke or some other that I can't think of off the top of my head. You aren't going to change my mind. For me, it will ALWAYS be the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees as the greatest rivalry in all of sports. PERIOD!!! End of discussion!

But he wasn’t a friendly guy at that point in his life. And as time rolls’s pretty obvious that Munson really pushed the rivalry more because he was truly jealous. Had he lived, I think he would’ve mellowed out and become more mature. The other thing I’ve just now recognized is what a class act Carlton Fisk was and is.
